Unidentified gunmen shot dead the vice mayor of President Quirino town of Sulatan Kudarat province Monday late afternoon.

Sultan Kudarat police chief Senior Superintendent Benhur Mongao said Froilan Rufino, vice mayor of President Quirino town, was standing outside his home in Barangay Katico around 5:55 p.m. when motorcycle-riding men appeared and fired shots using a caliber 9mm pistol.

"He was apparently texting or talking to someone over the phone when the suspects came. One went down the motorcycle and fired," said Mongao.

The vice mayor was taken to Romualdez Katico Hospital. He was however declared dead on arrival by physicians.

Mongao said initial investigation shows the victim sustained three bullet wounds in the head.

The police official said that the incident may have stemmed from political or personal circumstances. He admitted however that they have yet to determine the perpetrators' motive.

"Our chief of police there, who is a cousin of the victim has yet to submit details of his investigation," said Mongao said, referring to President Quirino police chief Senior Inspector Isabelo Rufino, a first cousin of the victim.
